GWG Undercover: Women Under Fire - Ladies Only CCW Classes
May 09, 2014

A first-hand account of our Social Media Coordinator's TOP SECRET, undercover mission inside the walls of LADIES-ONLY CCW CLASSES...

It was a dark and stormy night, in a city that knew how to keep its secrets… Ahh, who am I kidding?? I’ll tell you what it was; another sweltering, 105* day at Girls with Guns HQ in the small, Northern California valley town of Red Bluff. Not nearly as attention-grabbing, huh? Well, while this isn’t your typical, run-of-the-mill P.I. novella, it is the story of how one brave GWG employee went undercover, daring to infiltrate the often misunderstood culture of the cult-like world of LADIES-ONLY CCW CLASSES…

Eight months ago, I was sitting at my newly-acquired desk, having just started as the Social Media Coordinator and Girl Friday at GWG less than two months before. I was praying that my sluggish floor fan would miraculously find 4th gear and grace my overheated body with a cooler-than-room-temperature breeze, when the phone rang. It was Nancy*, a GWG Facebook follower, calling to get more information about the NorCal Firearms Instruction course calendar I had just posted on our social media sites.

Ted Lidie, owner and head instructor of NFI, had been a friend of GWG’s for many years, helping Jen & Norissa get into gun-shape for many of their hunts and competitions, and was always an informative reference for all things gun-related. While the owners of GWG were already more gun-savvy than most hunters I knew, I was impressed that they recognized true talent when they saw it, and had asked Ted to help keep them at the top of their game: reviewing range footage, adjusting firearm fit, and updating tactical maneuvers. In turn, he always made sure to send us his monthly newsletter, this time highlighting his upcoming Ladies-Only CCW (Concealed Carry Weapon) Class, as he thought some of our customers might be interested in participating. Sure enough, that was the class Nancy* was calling about:

“My husband has been encouraging me to finally get my CCW permit since he works out of town all the time, and he would feel better knowing I was being smart and safe, but I just don’t know which one to choose,” she said, adding, “I think I’d feel more comfortable attending the Ladies-Only class, so I don’t have to deal with all of those know-it-all men, but I’m worried that the instructors will treat us like idiots because we’re women, and dumb down the course material.” We talked for a few more minutes, and ended with my suggestion that she do some additional research, talk it over with her husband, and we hung up. I sat there for a few minutes, thinking about the difficult decision Nancy had to make, and not knowing which class I would choose if I were in her shoes. Then it hit me…wouldn’t it be great if we could get a first-hand account of these so-called “Ladies-Only Classes” from a woman who had little-to-no firearm experience, to share with all of our fans that were considering a CCW class?!? That’s when the idea for GWG Undercover was conceived!

I immediately jumped online and registered for the Ladies-Only class at My only saving grace was that, because I was new to GWG, Ted had yet to meet me in person, and only knew me by my nickname. Otherwise, my cover would have been blown before I could start my investigation. I knew I could play dumb, because it had truly been over a year since I’d been to the range, and I was always more of a long-gun gal anyways. Ted’s website made it easy for me to find the class I was looking for, and registration was a breeze compared to other registration attempts (California DMV anyone?!?). After I clicked “Submit,” I not-so-patiently waited for the weekend of the class, and continued to plan out my reconnaissance mission…
