Meet TeamGWG's Whitney Vau
January 31, 2017

Meet TeamGWG's Whitney Vau, a huntress from Northern California's wine country.

What is your favorite animal to hunt?
Deer and then ducks.

What was your last indulgence?
I bought a new hunting rifle Remington .270 and Vortex scope. My next indulgence will be buying my first bow!

What is the funniest thing that has happened you in the field?
I seem to fall down quite a bit.

Three words to describe you:
Hard working, Kind, Energetic

Favorite piece of GWG Gear.
I love the classic camo hat because I wear hats a lot (literally and figuratively).  The running pants are cute and perfect for training/working out. And I love my waterfowl jacket because it fits a woman’s body well.

Treestand or Stalk?
Stalk! Those blacktail deer are pretty sneaky.

Weapon of Choice?
A rifle, but I plan to invest in a bow really soon.

Your best tip for a new hunter?
Take time to prepare yourself mentally and physically. Remember it’s more about the experience than harvesting an animal every time.

If you could hunt with anyone, who would it be?
I would have loved to hunt out of state with my grandfather before he passed away, but I know he will still be there watching me when I go to Colorado this fall. I don’t get the opportunity to hunt with a lot of women so going hunting with Jen, Norissa and the GWG ladies would be a blast!

What was the last thing your child/husband/boyfriend/hunting buddy did to make you laugh?
One of my cousins got buck fever so bad he leaned over the front of the jeep for a rest and shot through the hood of the jeep. And he missed the big buck!

Last time you freaked out?
When I almost stepped on a rattlesnake at the bottom of my porch steps! That’s what you get when living in the country.

Pet Peeve?
Being too busy during the week to work out/exercise

Last gift you gave?
A compliment

Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, all or none?  (Give your handles you would like to share)
IG - whitney_outdoors

Last time you cringed?
Pulling the stitches out of my chin recently

What do you love to do when you aren’t hunting?
I love fishing, hiking, golfing, cooking and hanging out with my family and boyfriend and of course Charlie the lab.

Last time you watched the sunset/best sunset (or sunrise)
I went with my boyfriend to watch him archery hunt and we woke up at 4:30 AM to drive up the mountain. We watched the sunrise over Clearlake and it was gorgeous. There’s something special about watching a sunrise with someone you care about and I always feel productive starting the day early while most people are probably still in bed.

Bow, Gun, or both:
Right now I’m a girl with many guns, but this winter I would like to invest in a bow.

If you had a million dollars, what’s the first thing you would do?
Pay off all my debt. And then book some out of state hunting trips!

What charity do you love?
I love California Waterfowl Association CWA and I was club president of the Chico State Chapter in college. They really involve kids and teach them about the outdoors and conservation. They also have an awesome wood duck program!

Favorite shade of lipstick and/or nail polish:
I actually never paint my fingernails!

If you had one hour to live, how would you spend it?

Which is better?  Nap or mani/pedi
A nap for sure! Sleep is so important!

What motto best describes you?
When the going gets tough, the tough get going

You’re a girl with a gun – what gun is it?
My hunting rifle is now a 270

Who taught you to hunt?
My dad and grandpa

Who was your favorite teacher and why?
My dad because he was patient and also made me learn from experience

What’s one item on your bucket list?
To go out of state hunting (which I’m doing finally this fall) I would also love to harvest a bobcat or lynx    Update: See above photo from Whitney's out of state hunt and check Whitney's IG to see her bobcat harvest!

A fun fact no one would know about you?
I like to write poetry

Do you believe we need female role models for young girls in our industry?
Definitely! I grew up hunting with mainly men so it’s refreshing to see women taking over the industry.

How do you train to be prepared for your season? (whatever your season may be - hunting, calling, fitness, etc.)
Lifting weights is where I see a huge difference with building muscle and getting more strength. GWG has great workout gear you can wear indoors or outdoors when you train.

Other fun facts:
-One time I was driving to the Sacramento valley to duck hunt and a crop duster plane almost hit me! I had to slam on the brakes because they flew underneath the telephone wires to land.
-I was 9 years old when I took my hunters safety exam!
-I only owned 2 waterfowl jackets in 16 years of waterfowl hunting (age 9-24), I got my use out of them that’s for sure! Last Christmas I got my third and favorite jacket I’ve ever owned (sleeves were getting kind of short in my old one!) which is from GWG. I’m so in love with it!
-My first gun was a BB gun. I would take my pet cat with me and shoot birds out of the fruit trees then she would eat them.
-When I first started duck hunting I was too short to see out of the blind so my dad had to build me a box to stand on and that blind became the designated “Whitney blind.”
-The first deer I ever harvested my whole family was with me and my sister started crying and said, “you’re going to go to hell now.” She has never told me that again thank goodness so I think she has accepted the fact that I’m a hunter.
