TeamGWG's Kali Thompson takes State Shooting Title
June 14, 2017

Kali Thompson, a freshman at Wyandotte High School has earned the title of State Champion and a position on the Kansas High School Rodeo Association (KHSRA) national team. Kali will be traveling to Gillette WY, July 16-22 to compete at the 69th annual National High School Finals Rodeo (NHSFR) in the Light Rifle Shooting Competition.

Featuring more than 1,750 contestants from 43 states, five Canadian Provinces and Australia, the NHSFR is the world’s largest rodeo. In addition to competing for more than $200,000 in prizes, NHSFR contestants will also be competing for more than $350,000 in college scholarships and the chance to be named an NHSRA World Champion. The NHSRA in conjunction with the National Rifle Association (NRA) has held shooting competitions for both Junior High and High School Divisions since 2007.  Contestants qualify for the events at their state/provincial level and the top 4 contestants from each state or province can compete at the National Finals. Competitors can compete in both .22 Caliber (Smallbore) Rifle Competitions as well as a Trap Shooting event.  Contestants in the light rifle competition shoot at 50 yards in 3 positions: prone, kneeling and standing. The top 20 shooting contestants after the First Go Round at NHSFR will advance to the Short Go to compete for the World Champion Title.

Kali also competes in the Barrel Racing, Goat Tying and Breakaway Roping and finished 5th in the state in the Goat Tying this year. In addition to rodeo she enjoys hunting, running track, playing basketball and is an active member of the Bar-None Cowboy Church. To prepare for Nationals Kali will be working with her shooting coach Mike Nelson at Excalibur Sporting Goods in Afton, Ok. Kali has been training with Mike for two years and last year placed 28th in the nation at the Jr High National Shooting Competition in Lebanon, TN. Kali would also like to thank her other sponsors Girls with Guns Clothing, Charlie 1 Horse Hat Company, Simple Equine, and Double A Forge for all of their support this year, she is excited to represent them at Nationals!
